AGM on the 4th of Sept
A reminder that the AGM is on the 4th of September starting at 8.30, hope to see you there.
The Munster Championship will take place in the West County Hotel, Ennis on the weekend of 18th to 20th September. Full info is on the Munster Chess Union site.
Cork chess club will start coaching sessions for an hour from 7pm to 8pm on Fridays, all levels from beginners up welcome. This will cost €2 per person for the hour. Please contact Steve Short at 087 6540113 if you are interested.
Alex Lopez is back!
Alex scored 7/7 in our second rapid play, Hugh Doyle came second, Matthew Gallagher and John A.O’Dowd got the grading prizes. Full results are on our report page.
Second UCC rapid play
The second rapid play is on the 1st of August in the fantastic setting of the Aula Maxima in UCC. More info on our reports page.
Rory Quinn wins rapid play
That’s chess for you, just when we thought we were invincible here in Cork, a Clareman turns up and takes our rapid play! Congratulations to Rory on outright first with Kieran Moynihan second, with Barry Foran and Martin O’Donohoe winning grading prizes and Emil Sean Skovgaard getting the junior prize.
Cork men hold all titles!
Congratulations to Corkman Philip Short on coming joint first in the Irish Championship. As Pat Twomey has the senior title, Denis O’Connell the intermediate, Gerard Condon the juniors and Cork Chess Club the Munster league, we can safely say it’s been a good year for Cork chess!
Cork players doing well in Irish Championship
Congratulations to Gerard Condon on winning the Irish juniors, he beat fellow Cork player Barry Foran in the final round to win it outright, with Barry coming joint second. In the intermediate Corkman Denis O’Connell drew with another Cork chess club member Alex Byrne to win it with Alex coming joint second. All we need now is Philip Short to win the seniors for a clean sweep for Cork!
Rapid play tournaments
UCC Chess Club in collaboration with Cork Chess Club celebrate Keegan O’Mahoney’s selection as the Irish representative for the World U20 Championship to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia next September. As a fundraiser for Keegan’s trip we are running two Rapidplays on the 18th of July and the 1st of August. Full info here.

Congratulations to Keegan who is heading to the World Junior U20 Championships 2015, Sep 9th – 16th, Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia
The club championship has now been rated
Due to software issues the club championship could not be rated until now, but the results are available here. Some notable gains for youngsters, Tom McGrath (126 pts) and Adam Deane (82 pts) and not quite so young Mick Power (70 pts)!
Closed for the summer!
The club is closed for the summer, we will start the new season on the 4th of September with the AGM. Most weeks a few players meet in the Idle Hour pub, Albert Road, on Tuesday nights from 9.15pm on, all welcome.
Steve Short wins club championship
Steve Short won with a score of 6.5/7 with Keegan O’Mahoney and Dave Smith coming joint second, Tom McGrath gets the under 1600 grading prize and Adam Deane the under 1300 with Len Hackett winning the David versus Goliath prize after beating Hugh Doyle, full results are here.
Club Closing on 29th for the summer
The club will finish with a blitz tournament on the 29th with the prize giving afterwards for the club championship, all welcome!

Final round club championship
With Steve Short and Keegan O’Mahoney on 5.5 and Hugh Doyle on 5, it’s still all to play for in the club championship this year, the draw for the final round is available here. The last round must be played on the 22nd of May unless you make a previous arrangement with your opponent, a number of players were left waiting in the club for opponents that didn’t show could you please contact the club or your opponent if you can’t make it.
Don’t forget this Friday the 17th is the last day to play your game in the club championship, if you can’t make it please contact your opponent, the draw is here.

Our main computer died just before the start of the tournament so we couldn’t get the live boards running, hopefully tomorrow.
Cork Congress starting Friday 27th, club will be closed
The club will be closed on the 27th.
Online entries for the congress is now finished you can still pay on the day if you enter before 7pm.
We hope to have the top three boards in the masters and board one in both the major and minors going out live.
Cork chess club is focusing more on coaching in recent times and has organised coaching in a number of schools, we are also planning on having coaching for kids starting next September. Recently Henk de Jonge and Len Hackett completed an officially recognised (fide) coaching coarse with more info here.

Hugh only drop half a point to win the rapid play with Steve Short coming second and Alex Byrne and Michael Bradley joint third.
Rapid Play on the 20th
We will run a 5 round rapid play on the 20th of March to warm up for the congress, it will be 15 minutes each with no increments. The clocks will start at 8.30 sharp!
We will also be taking entries to the congress on the night.

Some of you have expressed concern about the Irish Chess Unions plan to change the membership rule for tournaments, this will not apply to the Cork Congress.

We had a number of forfeits due to Halloween night but the second round is now here. Last years joint winner Paul Walsh has pulled out as Friday just doesn’t suit. Games to be played no later than 5th of December. If you cannot make the 5th you must contact your opponent beforehand and arrange an earlier date.

Membership and Club Championship
We will be taking membership fees (Adult €45, Child/Student/Unemployed €30) and entry to club championship next Friday the 12th of Sept

The annual general meeting of the club will be held on the 5th of Sept starting at 8.30pm sharp.
Chess in schools course on 26th of August
We will be running a course on the 26th of August to teach chess in schools with John Foley from the English chess in schools program this will run from 10.30 to 4.30 in the chess club, you do not need to be a strong chess player for this, it is to teach beginners. Henk was unbeaten to win the summer blitz tournament with 8/8 and Keegan O’Mahony was second.
Blitz on the 30th to finish up
Cork Chess Club will close for the summer months, with the 30th of May being the last night, we will finish with a free night blitz tournament before the prize giving, hope you all can make it. For any or our younger members starting exams soon, we would like to wish you the best of luck. The club will reopen on the 5th of Sept, but we hope to organise a few events during the summer. Watch this space.

The final round of the club championship went to the wire, with Steve Short winning a rook and bishop ending against Paul Walsh, so they share first place and Hugh Doyle winning against Henk de Jonge to come third on his own. Full results soon.
